While I did not have the opportunity to work with ‘Chief’ in an official capacity, I did have the honor of meeting him on several occasions and we shared many mutual friends. U.S. Senators Thad Cochran, Roger Wicker, and U.S. Representative Gregg Harper today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has released $4,980,692 in funding for the Jackson-Evers International Airport. These funds will provide the airport with security enhancements and will improve the terminal. It will also rehabilitate the runway and modernize the drainage system.

HARPER ANNOUNCES KEY FIELD FAA GRANT
U.S. Representative Gregg Harper (R-Miss.) recently notified Tom Williams, the executive director of the Meridian Airport Authority, of a $481,235.00 grant award. The award, issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration, allows Key Field to advance on a project to relocate the glide slope antenna from one side of the runway to the other. The relocation would accommodate a parallel taxiway that is currently being constructed.

Currently, the runways are practically unusable due to soil heaving, bumps and dips.

CONGRESSMAN GREGG HARPER COMMENTS ON SCHIP
On Wednesday, January 14, 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives took up consideration of H.R. 2, the Children’s Health Insurance Reauthorization Act of 2009 (SCHIP). U.S. Representative Gregg Harper (R-MS) voted against the bill although it was passed by a vote of 289 to 139. While Congressman Harper certainly supports providing healthcare to poor children, and in fact favors reauthorization of the SCHIP program, the bill that was passed today by the U.S. House greatly expands the original program at a cost to the taxpayers of $35 billion over the next four-and-a-half years.
